Yes folks we have a new insulin and the best best news is that it is priced affordable – R590 SEP for a long acting insulin that almost guarantees NO hypos!!!
What great great news !!!
I can barely contain my excitement as I scribble out scripts for gazillions of patients for whom this means a huge leap up in quality of life living with type 1 diabetes or diabetes that requires insulin injection.
What is it? Toujeo – or insulin glargine U300 – lots to figure out. In a nutshell it is the same as lantus/optisulin BUT squashed smaller. What does that mean?
Science is “fucking” wonderful – sorry I had to – I LOVE !!! science. When you make a molecule smaller you decrease the surface area and thus slow the absorption rate right down. So now you have a more concentrated molecule (U300 vs U100) that is “dissolving” or releasing much more slowly and predictably and yes you guessed it all you insulin boffins out there – no stacking of insulin, which means no HYPOS !!
Simple yet brilliant, don’t you think – or am I just a proper nerd.
Once daily dosing – truly once daily.
No hypos, predictable.
Need I say more
Toujeo or not to je o ??
So I have applied for continuous monitoring for a type 1 patient who has multiple hypos affecting daily living. He is on a top plan of momentum (I have other patients on this plan who fund continuous monitoring). I then appealed and put in a second appeal to their DECLINE.
We have been told in writing that they have declined it a third time but with no reason and that they are withholding their criteria from us.
This is common garden crime!
I say this is bullshit! to put it mildly.
In south africa where we have human rights we have a very progressive legislation and law. We have so much and yet we have nothing.
Medical aids keep moving the goal posts and now we don’t even know what they are in this case.
NO transparency. NO patient care. NO clear communication.
I believe that there needs to be a tide by both patients and doctors against this kind of bullshit decision and policy.
Let me know if you are in and we can go to the ombudsman.
The real bonafide truth – what is that? In south africa at the moment -what is the truth? What are the bonafide real real indisputable hard FACTS?
I think it is hard. The reality of the average homeless or jobless person is very very far removed from the average Gupta family member or for that matter cabinet member who spends as much as “butter belly” Dlamini on travel in one year.
I think its impossible to know where the likes of those with brains stand at the moment. We have a new word – to “mantash” – it’s to do a 180 degree turn in opinion in a matter of a few days. How does one reconcile this “change in attitude” with the real truth of the matter?
I think there is so much we do not understand about our president’s agenda. I think we are in for a very rude awakening. He is not going anywhere. He has a lot of dirt on a lot of people. What is the truth behind this man?
History proves that good does not win in the short term. We can look at Hilter and Stalin and HF Verwoerd and South Sudan and Robert Mugabe. These men and places are evil personified and caused suffering for the masses but yet prevailed. They ruled. They dictated. They dictate.
The truth is scary. As a white minority in south africa our future is indeed bleak. I can not see how this could be different. The sad part for me is where does that leave the masses of underpriveledge people who are currently once again a pawn in a chess game?
The truth is that they will never be “considered” in a kind way in terms of their own future either. Used -yes. Promised – yes. But deliver? No – not if you look at the truth of the matter.
Mugabe has literally gotten away with murder on many accounts. He raped and pillaged Zimbabwe’s treasury and guess what – he remains. At the ripe old age that he is.
Think long and hard about what you really can do? I am not saying do nothing. But it will take a LOT more than marches etc, petitions etc and “white whining” to get this mess sorted. And if history is anything to go by – the future is bleak.
No I do not want that – but I am trying to wake you -yes YOU up to the reality of what it is going to take. We have spineless people (they have brains) in parliament – the chances of a vote of no confidence is extremely slim.
If you really care about this country and ALL it’s countrymen what we need now is more than a miracle.
There are various teams around the world – dedicated scientists and enthusiastic people working on all aspects of diabetes – trying to find prevention, cure, treatments – better, onwards and upwards. The diabetic scientific community at large strive for better quality of life.
There are also many snake juice paddlers as there are fake news folk. Do not be duped or sucked into some scam.
It’s a pity that in the light of such a huge and devastating epidemic there would be folk peddling snake juice and basically lying to a vulnerable subset of people. But that is life and ours the task to engage the brain and always question.
New treatments, closed loop technology and cures are on the horizon and I salute the many people working around the clock to accomplish that. Please the internet if FULL of rubbish – surf wisely.
Where are we at in 2017. Have we learnt anything from our existence up to now?
What is life? What is quality of life? Who are humans? What is power?
From the year dot – and who really knows when exactly that was, humans have lived on earth and by definition had to co-exist. We have grouped ourselves into various different groupings. We have fought wars. We have progressed in many ways and regressed in others.
There are places on earth where justice exists and there are places where it does not. Most of us would prefer to live/be born where there is an inkling of justice and freedom?
So many people were convinced that Trump would not actually become president. They laughed scoffed and said it would never ever happen. It did.
Now here we are in 2017 in a fairly regressed place – I believe. Where one person signs into being orders that blanketly prevent movement of “free” people categorising them by a set of rules. Abortion is bad – terrible and to be frowned upon but living people who are living in a war-torn unjust places are even worse, cursed and must remain that way with no redemption? And America – the once – free world is now becoming an insular, inward focused country with walls around it. No boogy men or women allowed in. Are you really that narrow minded ? Mr Trump? The message preached sounds really quite extraordinary, quite two-faced, quite astonishing.
As the CNN reporter put it – americans risk of being killed in america by any one of these nations so called terrorists is a very very small number with the total counted up to now being zero.
However countries that provide profit to Mr Trump (whose citizens may be more dangerous) seem to be fine for the moment (don’t hold your breath though).
I wonder where this is all headed. In about 2 weeks a brand new landscape opens up across America – no longer the free world. No longer an american dream. No longer.
And yet there is support against Trump worldwide ?
I really wish that the way I see things is perhaps not the way they are – can someone point out a positive here? Is Trump actually doing a good thing? A thing I can not see?
One thing’s for sure it seems that women have found a voice and their inside beast has been shaken and woken. Riled. No longer will we put up with atrocities of the past and trying to be silenced by patriarchy.
It is not ok to carry on the way Donald Trump has on videos etc and think that this can be swept under some great big male carpet.
It is not ok to break down years of progress made by women at large in terms of struggles fought on many levels.
I am delighted to see woman globally uniting and voicing their own truth.
It’s almost guttural and certainly from a very strong deep place inside. It’s certainly pro unity and taking a stand.
From madonna to Ashely Judd to Michael Moore. From the USA to australia. Unity.
Yes we are diverse. Yes we are a rainbow. Yes we are not the same. But yes we are united.
So where these odd men think they can sit around a table and legislate things that they will never understand.
A man will never understand the process of bearing a child. From conception to death of that same child.
And interestingly there is not a man on the planet who was not birthed through the channel of a women- and they dare to speak of respect – oh my word!
I would love for this to change biologically and maybe someday it will. When hormone patches were put onto men in a trial (perimenopause trial) 100% of them became unstable and unhappy to say the least, so it will truly be an interesting day if that does happen.
I am glad women at large have been riled and are speaking out. I do hope that there will be ears that will listen and at the very least engage in debate and try to understand what it is that has riled womanhood.
I was riled yesterday to the point of boiling over into this article. Luckily in my case reason did prevail and I am very grateful. I will take this a a great positive step forward.
Diabetes is a scourge of modern day living. Why are we not winning ?
This is a simple disease – type 2 that is perfectly PREVENTABLE and perfectly treatable and yet we are losing this battle left right and centre.
Dialysis, amputations, blindness abound and really should not.
WE have the tools but we do not have political will or the will of the people.
We live in an age where as humans we choose easy street time and time again. Easy street in eating, easy street in not exercising, easy street in unhealthy choices.
One hundred years ago we were skinny and ate half of what we do currently and guess what we had a almost nil type 2 problem. Fast forward to 2016 and the numbers are staggering (like a drunkard) – out of control.
For a disease that is preventable and treatable.
A sugar above 10 has an effect much like coke on the floor – everything becomes one sticky stuck together mess – that’s a poorly controlled diabetic’s body.
Keep your sugar below 10 and voila – no problems in fact, keep your sugar at target and you live longer than a non-diabetic !
Easy peasy lemon squeezy – but we are not doing it ?
I urge you to look after your body – the only one you have – check your sugar regularly -pick up diabetes early and treat it. Better still eat healthily and exercise and skip it. It is possible. It is really possible – however if you would rather just be fat and still – have some diabetes.
