Chronic illness like diabetes especially type 1 diabetes where your life depends on testing your sugars and injecting insulin can become fatiguing to say the least. The drain and strain of this burden gets you down no matter how positive the patient and the family.
But what can be done?
I have a few tips for diabetes and other chronic disease burnout :
1.) Every day is a new day, forget the past, forgive yourself for the mistakes, highs lows etc and begin afresh almost like today is the first day
2.) Give yourself a mental break, have a week off mentally of driving strict control
3.) “allow” yourself to cheat now and again making sure you do it safely-ie inject to cover the carbs accurately
4.) See a psychologist or a life coach or similar profession regularly through state or privately – you owe it to yourself.
5.) Take anti-depressants where indicated, don’t feel guilt about it, if it has been prescribed to you for burnout, depression take them.
6.) Get together with other type1’s or people with a similar diagnosis both for sharing the good tips and debriefing about the bad stuff, no-one can commiserate like someone going through the same thing.
