There is a goal to eradicate blindness by cataract by the year 2020. Perfect vision is 20/20 or 6/6. A world health organisation WHO initiative from 1999 that aims to address multiple issues around vision and avoidable blindness it has taken off beautifully in some parts of the world and yet is sadly lacking in others.
Interesting to me the case of the eastern cape government, happy to jump on the band wagon of an NGO like Grace Vision and “claim” it’s successes but not even vaguely interested in helping fund a very worthy and well run cause.
I used to work in the government sector for 8 years. There is every single excuse not to work thought up by the staff nursing and other -like not enough staff (they require 4 nurses in order to operate), out of stock of something, too hot, too cold etc etc. Possibly some vaguely plausible but almost always overcomeable with will.
I find it sad that as humans when we are part of a big machine like government sector the vast majority of us default to the lowest energy setting.
Challenge to government health sector – partner with the NGO’s financially and see the gain/win and delight of YOUR people – the people of south africa.
